Rivian is an electric vehicle manufacturer on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. In Rivian’s formative years, Vectorform helped Rivian envision, design, and prototype an in-vehicle HMI and IoT system by exploring new models, strategies, and business opportunities that helped realize the future of mobility in densely populated markets.

Project Goals

HMI/Interior design and IoT Alpha Build for investor previews and presentations

Innovate adventure and gig work with senior leadership, UX, brand and interior design

Validate concepts through prototype building

Results

Rivian employed around 100 people at the end of 2016, and that number grew to 160 by August 2017. Sumitomo Corporation made a "strategic investment" in Rivian in December 2017, and Rivian reported that its alpha prototypes were complete and undergoing testing. Rivian has gone on to attract further investments from the likes of Amazon, Ford, and Cox Automotive.

Alpha Prototype Build Out

Assess hardware and software components for product implementation toward the development of an interactive demonstration and simulation of multiple screens, for investor and user testing including live CAN BUS Data integration, car on-boarding experience, and UI design.

Customer Storylines

Facilitated workshops to develop user storylines, personas, and storyboard interaction flows.

Experience Design

Concepting for cluster, dashboard, and infotainment displays, animated throughout multiple customer journeys from gig work to adventure.

User Testing

Validate concepts during user sessions with an array of interconnected devices and remote-control capabilities.

Early assessments on HMI CX connected back to brand ethos and business model helped drive clarity and strategy for future product development cycles. This strategic early investment with Rivian provided functional designs integrated into first gen vehicles, with simulated capabilities for an extended look at future capabilities. By visualizing the digital elements within the broad design process for Rivianinvestors and stakeholders were given an early look of the vehicles digital capabilities and value.
