With our expertise in mixed reality development for Enterprise customers, Unity chose to partner with Vectorform to create their first-ever HoloLens 2 experience. Highlighting the improved features and functionality of Microsoft’s new platform, the resulting Unity project demonstrates how to leverage the gesture-based interactions, improved hand tracking, voice controls, and advanced spectator view of the HoloLens 2. Wrapped in the context of a Robotics Engineering Firm, this sample application demonstrates these features through step-by-step onboarding instructions and completion of several tasks using a robotic arm and engine.

Goals

Promote HoloLens 2 Functionality

Engage users with a HoloLens 2 experience to explore new capabilities and functionality.

Equip Sales Team

Deliver a demo experience to drive effective client meetings, educational sessions, and internal training at Unity.

Empower Developer Community

Provide seasoned and prospective developers with a sample project they can use to get more familiar with Unity and the Microsoft HoloLens 2.

Results

Unity ushers in a new era of Mixed Reality, giving organizations new tools for experimenting and collaborating.

Working with Vectorform on our HoloLens 2 demo application was a great experience thanks to the combination of skills they bring to the table. Their development capabilities are first-rate, but they also bring industry domain knowledge, UX, design and project management skills. The result is confidence-inspiring execution.

Grabbing and Placing Objects

Grab the robot arm and place it anywhere in the room. Once placed, direct the robot to lift and move the car engine into a specific interaction area.

Exploded View

“Pull apart” the components, expanding and revealing the interior for further examination, physically walking around the holographic engine to inspect the “exploded” parts from any angle, while sliders allow for segmented reconstruction.

Cutaway Detail

Grab the interactive handles to reveal the cutaway view, showing how the engine looks internally and how the pieces all work together. Freely move the cutaway through any point of the engine for unconstrained exploration.

Spectator View

Larger audiences can observe the first-person experience through Spectator View, with HoloLens 2 synchronized with an iOS device (single spectator) or broadcast to multiple devices (spectator group).

As a serial early-adopter of new technology, Vectorform truly appreciates the value of having great documentation and coding samples on day 1 to accelerate adoption.  Working with Unity to produce a best-in-class sample application highlighted the benefits of the new HoloLens 2 and Unity’s ability to support the growing ecosystem of immersive technologies with an exceptional development platform and toolset.
